Media I Have Enjoyed Through University
Marvel
My boyfriend introduced me to Marvel the year before I started university. As soon as I started watching it with him, I became hooked. When we finished catching up on the
films, I began to re-watch them all over again because it was a totally new genre of film that I hadn't really watched growing up. I became fascinated with Marvel, falling in love with characters and storylines that carried on through multiple films. I enjoy that with each character they all have good and bad paths in their lives which allows me to take a liking to a villain like Loki.
During my time at university, I find myself revisiting the Marvel universe because it brings me comfort when I need to relax or when I feel stressed. There are certain characters that bring me comfort when I see them. Which are:
Tony Stark (Iron Man)- I would say he is my No.1 character I loved from the beginning and with his character starting off the MCU. I enjoyed his humour, kind heart and his need to protect his world. I could happily watch Iron man films back-to-back to see his character development with his anxiety and stress.
Peter Parker (Spider-man)- I enjoy the nervous/ awkward nature that the character gives off and his character is relatable as he displays the stress any teenager feels about his education i.e., homework, getting into college/university. I also enjoy him trying to protect his world while him attempting to live a normal teenage life.
Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow)/ Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch)- I've put these 2 characters together because I really can't choose between them. They provide the MCU with women empowerment. I enjoy that Natasha hasn’t got superpowers but how she was trained to be a ruthless spy but uses that training for good. I also enjoy that Wanda’s character is so strong-willed with so many aspects to her character going between being a villain and a hero, also finding love to grieving the loss of that love.
Murder Mystery Books
I used to read a lot when I was younger but as I grew up, I fell away from it. However, when I first met my boyfriend who loves everything to do with English. When I saw him reading, it reminded me of when I was younger. So, I decided I wanted to get back into it, but I didn't know where to start and I didn't know I wanted to start reading murder mystery books. I think what I did was just picked up books and read the blurb of each
book, murder mystery was the most interesting to me. The first book I chose to get me back into reading was called ‘A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.
This was the book that made me buy more, I've got 7 books and out of them, 5 are murder mysteries. I've enjoyed reading these books because you can join in as the story unravels. You can also make up reasonings in your head as to who you think did it with the evidence given throughout the book. I find these books very enticing because one time I was reading "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" and I kept saying to myself "I'll read one more chapter" until I had read about 8 chapters in a couple of hours, it was the first book I binged, and I could never fully know who done it obviously until the end as it was so well written. 2 of my favourite books that I have read is ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to murder’ because it gave the reader the chance to be the detective with the book having all this evidence throughout like interviews, people of interest lists and production logs which include other relevant evidence. My second favourite book is ‘This Lie Will Kill You’ because this one includes games for potential suspects to play, for a cash prize while trapped in a house, all set up by the deceased's sister. This book was more about reading not investigating with all the creepy items hidden around the house that would break one of the players into confessing.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
This is something else that growing up I always heard people talk about, but I never took an interest in watching it. However, recently again my boyfriend wanted to show me the trilogy and I have become more open to watching things I wouldn't usually. We started watching the first film, I fell in love with the world that had been created and the characters in it. I also enjoyed the layout of the trilogy cause I hadn't watched a trilogy before where it followed the journey across all three films. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it because when I watch a TV show/film I have to get connected to the characters so I can get fully immersed in the film.
One character that was my favourite was Aragorn because of his loyalty and mysterious nature that unravelled throughout the three films. *Spoiler alert* Another reason why Aragorn is my favourite is because in order to continue the voyage to Mordor. He had the strength to withstand the ring's corruption and the ability to put the ring's needs ahead of his own. If he hadn't done so, Frodo's friends would have perished alongside the ring's corruption and lost all hope. Another character I got attached to was Gandalf when I saw him die in the first film I was in shock and I turned to my boyfriend and kept saying “I don't believe it, he will be back”. I was totally in denial because he was the guide for the journey to Mordor. Also, throughout the film, you see three different groups and the different paths to reach the same place, for example, when Gollum was trying to turn Frodo against Sam or when Mary and Pippin got captured by Orcs and then they got separated. One had to join the fight and the other was taken away to hide from the Ring Wraiths and their Nazgûl. Also, when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli were in the battle of Helm's Deep. There were so many intense plots going on that just made you want to watch more.
